Cell phones may be hazardous to your health

Cell phones may be hazardous to your health

By Karen Abernathy - bio | email

More than three billion people use cell phones worldwide. Americans average about 13 hours a month talking on cell phones. But how much do you know about the risks of using cell phones?

There's some new information about the possible downsides of cell phone use you may not be aware of, that may have you thinking twice before you make your next call.

Men beware! a new study shows cell phone usage may be linked to infertility problems. Sperm health and sperm count are being studied at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.

Ashok Aganwai, PhD, is the Director for Reproductive Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic. He says they found, "There was degradation in the quality of the sperm in the group which was exposed to the cell phone for one hour."

Men who used their cell phones for more than four hours per day had the lowest quality of sperm.

That's not the only potential risk:

-Another recent study showed heavy cell phone use is linked to a 50-percent increased risk for developing tumors of the salivary gland.

-Studies show it takes twice as long for a person to fall asleep after talking on a cell phone for just 30 minutes.

-Studies show you could get what doctors call "mobile phone dermatitis" or a rash on the face, in reaction to the nickel in some cell phones.

-Your hands aren't free of risk either. Those who send a lot of texts may be at risk for "blackberry thumb" -- sore digits from overuse and repetition.

Experts also fear the younger you start using a cell phone regularly, the greater your risks. To minimize the potential risks, experts recommend using hands-free devices, and hold the phone away from the body. Less frequent calls that are shorter in duration may also be a good precautionary step.

Cell phone usage increases the risk of brain tumour?

Cell phone usage increases the risk of brain tumour?
Audrey Micah, Ghanadot

Accra, April 11, Ghanadot - There has been an on-going debate about the safety of cell phones for many years. Not surprisingly, the cell phone industry and various health authorities have countered to assure users that the technology is safe. However, recent research now suggests otherwise.

According to Dr. Vini Khurana, an award-winning cancer expert, mobile phones could kill far more people than smoking.

He said people should avoid using them if possible and urged government and the mobile phone industry to take "immediate steps" to reduce exposure to their radiation.

Cell phones are more like radios than traditional telephones in your home. They emit low levels of radiofrequency energy (RF) in the microwave range while being used. They also emit very low levels of RF when in the stand-by mode.

Using a cell phone can place the radiation antenna close to the user’s brain and this can lead to the absorption of comparatively large amounts of electromagnetic energy.

In an interview on Peace FM, the customer Relations Executive of "I 2" Limited, main distributors of Nokia phones in Ghana, Ms. Faith, admitted that, mobile phones can save lives in emergencies, but added that "there is a significant and increasing body of evidence which links mobile phone usage to certain brain tumours. This, she said, will "definitively be proven" in the next decade.

Ms. Faith added that it is advisable for people to stop using several phones or a phone which uses two chips at the same time - because scientists have proven that radiation from two phones made an egg cook during an experiment, giving reason why Nokia has not produced phones that uses two chips.

Hospitals Are Breeding Grounds for Superbugs

Hospitals Are Breeding Grounds for Superbugs

Do you know what the two most dangerous objects in a hospital are? A doctor's necktie and a doctor's cell phone! It's true: Neckties and cell phones harbor superbugs such as MRSA. This has been proven time and time again by numerous studies you can find written up in the popular press (http://health.usnews.com/articles/h...).

On the pharmaceutical side, superbugs are also caused by the rampant abuse of antibiotics by doctors, who seem to prescribe them for everything under the sun -- including those things that are completely unaffected by antibiotics such as viral infections.

Notably, all these objects -- neckties, mobile phones and antibiotics -- are only introduced to patients through the presence of a doctor, and that effectively makes doctors the single most dangerous thing in any hospital.

Of course, doctors can be extremely useful at times, especially in the emergency room where some kid who fell off the roof while filming a YouTube stunt needs to have his ankles reattached. But outside the realm of urgent care, doctors tend to spread disease a lot more than they spread health.

But don't take my word for it: Here's what others have to say on the subject of superbugs and doctors:

Authors' Quotes on Superbugs and Doctors
Below, you'll find selected quotes from noted authors on the subject of Superbugs and Doctors. Feel free to quote these in your own work provided you give proper credit to both the original author quoted here and this NaturalNews page.

Superbugs are not caped, crime-fighting bacteria found in comic books. They are antibiotic-resistant bacteria that are causing havoc in today's medical system. Why? Because antibiotics cannot kill these superbugs. Antibiotic-resistant infections kill as many as 8,000 patients each year in Canada and cost the health-care system at least $100 million annually.

The bugs that were "successfully" subdued with antibiotics for decades are now taking revenge by producing what is known as "antibiotic-resistant organisms," that is, superbugs that defy antibiotic treatment. Some 90,000 Americans suffer potentially deadly infections each year from a drug-resistant "staph superbug." According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), more people now die from these superbugs than from AIDS diseases. Recent nationwide outbreaks of infections caused by superbugs killed teenagers in U.S.

Do Cell Phones Harm Brains?

Do Cell Phones Harm Brains?
There’s been a great deal of talk lately about cell phone use, and increasingly people tell you they want a few basic rules to stop cell phone invasion that comes from loud conversations in quiet spaces.

But what about harmful effects that cells phones bring to the brain? Today’s Scientific American questions whether cancer fears from cell phone use, are fact of fiction? Listen to Dr. Olsen’s findings on prenatal concerns here. What do you think?

Scientists remain undecided about safety guarantees from mobiles, which is why they advise using an ear piece and speakerphone.

According to researcher Jorn Olsen at UCLA cell phones do not send enough radiation to alter or damage DNA, and for this reason do not tend to lead toward cancer.

Not surprisingly, long-term cell phone use seems to create greater problems, while short term exposure appears to hold less danger, according to most recent studies out there. UK researcher, Laurie Challis pointed out that of the 29,000 men and 38,000 women yearly who develop brain cancer people in industrial nations are twice as likely to develop brain cancer as those in developing countries. The jury is still out on why this is so.

Studies are currently being carried out in several countries on this topic, and yet research so far still shows conflicting conclusions. To complicate the findings further, plenty of anecdotal stories seem support both sides of the debate.

However since scientists cannot rule out harmful risks, some people are playing it safe to avoid increasing brain cancer risks. Which side of the debate are you on? Fact or fiction?

Mobiles pose neurological health risks

Mobiles pose neurological health risks
Although the link between cell phones and brain tumour remains inconclusive till date, a new study has warned that the ‘technological

advancement’ can pose number of risks to people’s neurological health.

Recent studies have shown that cell phones increase the risk of developing a brain tumor.

Now, taking examples from real-life scenarios, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) has warned that cell phones can cause risks to people’s neurological health.

Amongst their many illustrations was the example of a 50-year-old female who had suffered nerve damage owing to extensive cell phone usage and was diagnosed with cervical radiculopathy after complaining pain in her fingers and arm while holding her cell phone.

Other examples included instances such as that of a 16-year-old boy who suffered a concussion because he was texting as he walked into a telephone pole, a 29-year-old male who was talking on his cell phone while on an escalator, fell backwards, and lacerated his head.

Also, the experts further revealed that drivers distracted by cell phones were four times more likely to be in a motor vehicle accident.

The boffins have also offered several cell phone injury prevention tips.

They are: never text messaging or using a cell phone while performing any physical activities that require attention, talking hands free by using an earpiece or on speaker mode whenever possible, if your phone rings while driving, let the call go into voice mail and respond later when you are safely parked.

Cell Phone Radiation Effects, Brain Tumors and Chidren

With 3 billion cell phone users worldwide and more than 260 million in the United States alone—among them 46% of U.S. children aged 8–12, according to Nielsen Mobile figures released 10 September 2008—human exposure to low-energy radiation in the 800- to 2,000-megahertz range is at an all-time high. The most recent attempt to systematically review the epidemiologic evidence for increased risk of brain tumors related to cell phone use indicates that repercussions from this global experiment are coming to light. In a meta-analysis published in the May 2008 issue of the International Journal of Oncology, Swedish researchers found significant associations between long-term cell phone use and brain tumor risk. In July 2008 market research firm MultiMedia Intelligence reported that more than 16 million U.S. teens use cell phones.

“We found that cell phone use is linked to gliomas [malignant brain tumors] and acoustic neuromas [benign tumors of the brain's auditory nerve] and are showing up after only ten years,” says lead author Lennart Hardell, an oncologist and cancer epidemiologist at University Hospital in Örebro, Sweden. Specifically, for studies that included at least 10 years of exposure, there was a doubling in the risk of gliomas for ipsilateral (same-side) but not contralateral (opposite-side) exposures to the head (as reflected by which hand the subject typically used to hold his/her cell phone). A 2.4-fold increase in risk was seen for acoustic neuromas due to ipsilateral exposures, whereas no increased risk occurred for meningiomas (tumors that occur in the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord).

No Way to Hide Truth: Cell Phone Does Cause Tumor

No Way to Hide Truth: Cell Phone Does Cause Tumor
Wednesday, October 29, 2008 by: Chanyut Phrukkumwong (see all articles by this author)
Reducing Electromagnetic Frequency Exposure May Improve Your Health
(NaturalNews) Long-term exposure to electromagnetic radio waves at certain strengths does cause brain tumors. Just like in the case of cigarette smoking, which nobody realized could damage your health until the era where lung cancer caused by regular smoking showed up. Such warnings about the dangers from electromagnetic radio waves from cell phones have been around for some years now. But the reporting has not been very widespread because of the attempt to hide this truth from those who hold the stake, which is certainly the cell phone industry (manufacturers).

Dr. George Carlo is among the first scientists who warned the public about this danger. He refused a billion-dollar bribe from the cell phone industry who told him to keep quiet about the research results that he conducted. Take a look at his website, (http://www.safewireless.org) .

Other honest doctors and health advocates have helped this warning to become more widespread and more understandable by comparing such dangers with the ones associated to smoking. Everybody mistook, at first, that smoking was healthy but we have later come to know that it is dangerous.

More warnings about cell phones can be found here (http://www.naturalnews.com/cell_phone.html) .

We may notice that such warnings about the danger of cell phone is usually put out by honest doctors, health advocates, health-related people while hidden by cell phone industries or technology-related people. Until recently, this issue was mentioned about by the technology-related web site like CNET or ZD net.
http://news.zdnet.co.uk/communications/...
http://www.cnet.com/4520-6033_1-5741203...
Even though an objection against the research finding is also there, we know that it is only a voice from cell-phone industry who has tried its best to conceal this fact and to protect itself from losing the profits. This shows that the industry itself has already realized this truth simply because there is no way to hide it.

So what’s the deal? Is it possible to stop using cell phone? No way. Cell phone has become part of our daily lives. It helps us in case of emergency or while being in the place where we need to talk and no other safe communication device is available. We should take action to minimize such risk and to be responsible for our own health. Simply be smart. Take moderate practice. Make use of it but do not let it harm us. Use headset, use handsfree feature, use it only when a wired phone is not available, do not go for a long conversation, send a message instead of talking. There are quite a number of techniques to minimize the risk.

Also, we can be selective by choosing a cell phone model that emits minimum strength of electromagnetic waves possible. Check out here http://www.fda.gov/cellphones/qa.html#6.

Details about the concentration of electromagnetic waves at home noted in the following article is also of interest http://www.naturalnews.com/023307.html.

Since cell phone has become a world-wide public issue, everyone in the world uses it while its long-term use does cause some diseases, there should be a public law that helps administer the marketing, selling, and the use of cell phone the same way as on cigarettes or sports drinks. The law that enforces the labeling of warning message on every cell phone and/or cell phone shop like “Long-term use of cell phone causes cancer”, “Cell phone causes autism”, that prohibits children under the age of 15 or so (whose physical development is still not so endured as adult) to buy a cell phone is strongly encouraged.

Science And Study
With the cell phone bans taking a speedy toll at every aspect of everyday lives, one wonders if at all are the cell phones all that bad?

An editorial by a neurosurgeon at Lake Forest Hospital has delved into the biggest scientific concerns of recent times- Do cell phones increase brain cancer risk? Pawl has called for major research initiatives to assess the possibility that using cellular phones may lead to an increased risk of brain tumours.

He has called for collaborative research initiatives to determine whether the link between cell phones and brain cancer is real. Since a long time, scientists are worried that ELF exposure may increase the risk of brain cancers. But, till date, research has shown no clear link between cell phone use and brain tumors.

Some experts have suggested that apparent increases in the number of brain cancers might reflect the use of sophisticated imaging techniques like computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging."However, the fact that the incidence of gliomas, especially the more malignant varieties, is increasing warrants action on this issue," wrote Pawl.

long-term cell phone use is "more dangerous to health than smoking cigarettes.

According to Pawl, the main problem is that no other research groups have performed actual studies showing a clear relationship between brain tumours and ELF.

He has called on scientific societies to play a leading role in designing and conducting studies that will definitively determine the risks of brain cancer associated with ELF exposure, particularly from cell phones.

"It seems that a cooperative effort by both the scientific community and state governing bodies will be needed. Some spearhead is now necessary in view of the magnitude and seriousness of the situation," wrote Pawl.
Pawl''s editorial is published in the November issue of the journal Surgical Neurology. The editorial states that recent studies have raised concerns that long-term exposure to electromagnetic fields (ELF) from cell-phone handsets can increase the risk of brain cancers and other nervous system tumours.

Other studies by the same group suggested that the use of wireless handsets in cordless home phones posed the same risk. In fact, after reviewing the evidence, one author suggested that long-term cell phone use is "more dangerous to health than smoking cigarettes." Other recent commentators have raised similar concerns.
But, if the findings were true, there would have been instances of increased rates of brain cancers over the last two decades. Some studies have reported that this is the case, particularly for the most malignant brain cancers. However, other studies have found a stable tumour rate.

A Swedish research earlier this year, indicated an increased risk of brain cancers (gliomas) as well as acoustic nerve tumors (neuromas) in people using cell phones for ten years or longer. It said that tumours were more likely to develop on the same side as the cell phone was used.

With the ever-increasing use of cell phones, including widespread use by children and teenagers, the findings have become a great deal of concern. The damaging effects of ELF, if any, might be even greater in the developing brain.

With, at least the above research will give us a more logical reasons to control the usage of cellphones and fight its addiction.

Calls for More Research into Mobile Phone - Brain Cancer Links

Calls for More Research into Mobile Phone - Brain Cancer Links

Major research initiatives are needed immediately to assess the possibility that using cellular phones may lead to an increased risk of brain tumors, according to an editorial in the November issue of the journal Surgical Neurology.

Recent studies have raised concerns that long-term exposure to electromagnetic fields (ELF) from mobile phones can increase the risk of brain cancers and other nervous system tumors, according to the editorial by Dr. Ron Pawl, a neurosurgeon at Lake Forest Hospital, USA. He calls for collaborative research initiatives to determine whether the link between cell phones and brain cancer is real.

Scientists have long been concerned over the possibility that ELF exposure may increase the risk of brain cancers. Until recently, however, research has shown no clear link between cell phone use and brain tumors.

Earlier this year, a Swedish research group published an epidemiologic study suggesting an increased risk of brain cancers (gliomas) as well as acoustic nerve tumors (neuromas) in people using cell phones for ten years or longer. Tumors were more likely to develop on the same side as the cell phone was used. Other studies by the same group suggested that the use of wireless handsets in cordless home phones posed the same risk.

After reviewing the evidence, one author even suggested that long-term cell phone use is "more dangerous to health than smoking cigarettes." Other recent commentators have raised similar concerns.

The findings are alarming in light of the exponential growth of cell phones—now including widespread use by children and teenagers. The damaging effects of ELF, if any, might be even greater in the developing brain.

If the link is real, then rates of brain cancers should have increased over the last two decades. Some studies have reported that this is the case, particularly for the most malignant brain cancers. However, other studies have found a stable tumor rate.

Some commentators have suggested that apparent increases in the number of brain cancers might reflect the use of sophisticated imaging techniques like computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. "However, the fact that the incidence of gliomas, especially the more malignant varieties, is increasing […] warrants action on this issue," Dr. Pawl writes.

The problem, according to Dr. Pawl, is that no other research groups have performed actual studies showing a clear relationship between brain tumors and ELF. He calls on scientific societies to play a leading role in designing and conducting studies that will definitively determine the risks of brain cancer associated with ELF exposure, particularly from cell phones. "It seems that a cooperative effort by both the scientific community and state governing bodies will be needed," writes Dr. Pawl. "Some spearhead is now necessary in view of the magnitude and seriousness of the situation."
